“We Share, We Value, We Respect”
Dear Parents/Carers September 2024
I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the families and children of Year 2. We hope that you have had an enjoyable summer and that your child is looking forward to the new academic year. Hopefully, your child will find the learning experiences both enjoyable and rewarding, as the Year 2 curriculum has much to offer. As always we try to pack in as much as we can to ensure that the children have a rounded education that is not only academically rewarding but fun as well.
Dropping Off and Collecting your child/children.;
All pupils will be dropped off at the F/S KS1 playground library door.
Year 2 children will be collected from the KS2 playground.
Start time is from 8.45 to 8.55am and departure time 3:25pm.
Reading: Reading is one of the most important skills that children learn during their early education. Many of our Year 2 class have developed as good readers but it is vital that they continue to read regularly to become proficient readers; regular reading practice, at home and in school, is a very important part of your child becoming a fluent reader.
I hope we can work together to support your child’s development as a reader, so that they can become readers who use expression as they read and also have a good understanding of the books that they read.
The reading book is for you to share with your child and is meant to be reasonably easy to read so that they can enjoy the stories and master reading out loud. Ask your child to tell you a little bit about their book.
All the class will read on a Monday and your child will be given a reading book to take home to read. Your child will also have an additional reading day on a Thursday where they will be able to change their books if they have finished reading it. Additional reading sessions may happen throughout the week so please ensure that your child brings their reading book in every day. Please sign their diary at least three times a week so that we can ensure that they get to change their books regularly.
Homework:
Reading: Three to five times per week with the reading diary signed.
Other homework will be given out on a Friday to be handed in on the following Thursday. Please encourage your child to complete their homework to a good standard.
Spellings: The spellings your child receives will be linked to their individual phonic ability and Year 2 expectations. Please help your child to practise these words on a regular basis.
Handwriting: During the first term your child will receive handwriting tasks to help them to develop this key skill. Please help them to master the basic letter shapes and number shapes.
Maths Skills: Practice, learn and master number bonds to 10 and then number bonds to 20. Mastery means knowing without hesitation. Additionally, please help your child to learn their basic times tables as this will help them throughout their education. 2 /5 /10. Online maths work will be set on Classroom secrets kids. Your child will be given a password and log-on instructions next week.
PE: The class will have PE lessons on a Thursday and Friday. Please ensure that your child has a complete PE Kit in school. The kit includes a pair of pumps, white T-shirt, dark shorts (navy blue is preferable). Outdoor kit can also be sent in which could include a long sleeved top, leggings ect.
Please ensure that each item of clothing is marked with their name.
Kits will stay in school until half-term.
Finally: Please can you ensure that your child’s clothing is clearly marked with their name or initials as this will make it easier to return any misplaced items of clothing.
Please do not bring in any large bags or other items only the school reading book bags and P.E kit bag.
Contacting me: If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me via the school email, or the main office. Also, you are welcome to pass on quick messages at the door when dropping your child off or collecting them
Yours Faithfully,
Mr P. Cavanagh class teacher (Mrs. J. Armstrong - teaching assistant)
